Abstract

Economic crises arising from exchange rate volatility and high inflation have affected countries around world, particularly those with developing economies. The usual response of countries during times of crisis has been to design and implement stabilisation packages aimed at controlling the exchange rate, stabilising inflation, and restoring economic fundamentals. - - The stabilisation attempts pursued in Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe since the 1970s have motivated an interesting literature debating which strategy to adopt in order to achieve stabilisation and evaluate the merits of institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank (WB) and the International Development Bank (IDB) in assisting countries during these efforts. Provided that times of crisis and volatility will affect the traditional benchmarks used by economists, adjusting the basic economic framework to account for such structural changes is of paramount importance. - - This book makes an important contribution to this debate by providing a comprehensive review of the literature on stabilisation, and by extending analytical models to account for the shortcoming of crises, in an effort to test their relevance across developing countries. The essays in this volume will be of interest to policy makers, professional economists and students for their measurable implications and as a guide for further research in the literature. -

Abstract

The emergent so-called "Fourth Industrial Revolution" is regarded by some as a panacea for bringing about development to Africans. This book dismisses this flawed reasoning. Surfacing how "investors" are actually looting and plundering Africa; how the industrial internet of things, the gig economies, digital economies and cryptocurrencies breach African political and economic sovereignty, the book pioneers what can be called anticipatory economics -- which anticipate the future of economies. It is argued that the future of Africans does not necessarily require degrowth, postgrowth, postdevelopment, postcapitalism or sharing/solidarity economies: it requires attention to age-old questions about African ownership and control of their resources. Investors have to invest in ensuring that Africans own and control their resources. Further, it is pointed out that the historical imperial structural creation of forced labour is increasingly morphing into what we call the structural creation of forced leisure which is no less lethal for Africans. Because both the structural creation of forced labour and the structural creation of forced leisure are undergirded by transnational neo-imperial plunder, theft, robbery, looting and dispossession of Africans, this book goes beyond the simplistic arguments that Euro-America developed due to the industrial revolutions.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of the US subprime crisis in 2007, financial stability has become a pressing item in the agenda of governments and policy-makers worldwide. However, to date, there are no books that provide a comprehensive analysis of financial stability in all of its dimensions. 'Understanding Financial Stability' undertakes an in-depth analysis of all the concepts and issues related to financial stability. It establishes a general framework for a holistic assessment of financial stability, provides a comprehensive analysis pertaining to the genesis of financial crises, and offers key terms and elements embodied in financial stability. Posing the question of whether financial stability should rely only on resilience or predictability issues when it comes to handling crises, the book provides: Extensive coverage of all key issues involved in the field of financial stability; a consideration of the political economy; a complete and in-depth assessment of crises in the world based on full historical coverage; including a definition of crises, various theories of crises, costs related to crises, types of crises and policy responses to crises. This book will prove valuable to central bankers, economists, and policy-makers who are involved in the field of financial stability, as well as researchers studying the field.

Abstract

The world is presently buffeted by many challenges, some of which manifest in new forms, such as Fintech and cryptocurrencies, while some challenges prevail out of the legacy trailed behind by the 2007 global financial crisis. Financial stability represents a highly complex and multi-dimensional concept. This being so, a sound and holistic financial stability assessment requires a focus not only on the distinct sectors which make up an economy but also on certain key economic areas. 'Economic Areas Under Financial Stability' examines several core areas which interact directly with financial stability. A comprehensive consideration is given to local and international developments, the payment and settlements system, reserves, derivatives, and exchange rates. The book examines critical developments on both the local and international fronts, the systematic risks which characterise the payment and settlements system, different instruments of derivatives, and the significance of fiscal and monetary policy in relation to exchange rates. This book will prove valuable to central bankers, economists, and policy-makers who are involved in the field of financial stability, as well as researchers studying the field.

Abstract

This book approaches macroprudential oversight from the viewpoint of three tasks.  The focus concerns a tight integration of means for risk communication into analytical tools for risk identification and risk assessment. Generally, this book explores approaches for representing complex data concerning financial entities on low-dimensional displays. Data and dimension reduction methods, and their combinations, hold promise for representing multivariate data structures in easily understandable formats.  Accordingly, this book creates a Self-Organizing Financial Stability Map (SOFSM), and lays out a general framework for mapping the state of financial stability. Beyond external risk communication, the aim of the visual means is to support disciplined and structured judgmental analysis based upon policymakers' experience and domain intelligence.

Abstract

In the past half-century every Central and East European society has been twice subject to transformation. Initially, Hungary was transformed by communist-style modernization, increasing industry, expanding secondary education and improving health. The second shock was the collapse of the communist regime and the introduction of democratic institutions and a market economy. How much or how little impact has institutional change had on the lives of ordinary people? Drawing on detailed surveys, highlighted in tables and figures, the authors identify long-term changes in Hungary from the late 1940s to the late 1980s and provide an in-depth analysis of the impact of the collapse of the communist system in the 1990s. They also compare long-term and shor-term change in Hungary with trends in other Central and Eastern European countries.
